It's still the same old Silent Hill, with the creepy places and established people, and the basic premise, but Climax took that basic premise in a new direction. As Tom Hullet said, this Silent Hill is a "fresh start" for the main saga. A new brilliant idea brings the player in a frozen world populated by ugly monsters without any weapons for self-defense. Unluckily, the exploration and escaping phases are completely separated from each other, knowing this the core experience looses its charm.

Everything about it, from the graphics to the sounds to the controls, ranges from very good to exceptional and shows that developers can still squeeze out a good gaming experience from such an old system.

Some fans may be disappointed with the lack of weapons at first, but the developers have managed to create an excellent alternative. The loneliness and the nightmares create a sensation of fright, increased by the game toying with you psychologically. It does so by using information you give it, whether consciously or not. Combining that with a strong storyline, wonderful graphics and entertaining puzzles, makes this game come highly recommended for every horror-survival fan looking for a change.

So the game’s a mix of adventure, puzzling and running for your life but it would be nice to mix things up a bit more. There’s not really any sense of tension when there’s no ice about as you know nothing going to jump out at you and go boo! Still, it’s a functional thriller on the PSP and in a way it’s a blessing there’s no clunky combat as it’s never really been very good in any previous Silent Hill game.
