Interview with Mary McGlynnDate published: 2003 Question: How did you become interested in singing? Can you share a little bit about your background? McGlynn: My whole family sings and subsequently I’ve been singing since I was a baby. I used to sing in various clubs around Los Angeles when I first came to town, but have since retired from the lounge scene. I’ve also done a lot of studio work, singing background vocals for many different artists. Question: How did you get started working with the Silent Hill 3 Soundtrack project? McGlynn: I’ve been working for ZRO Limit for almost 8 years now, first as a voice over actor and now as a director and writer. They asked me to audition, so I did an acapella version of Yoko Kano’s song “Rain” from “Cowboy Bebop”. Along with Mr. Yamaoka, I think she is one of the most amazing composers around. Question: Have you ever done a videogame soundtrack before? McGlynn: I’ve voiced many different games as an actor before, but Silent Hill 3 is my first soundtrack. Question: Can you describe the creative process in recording the vocal tracks in Silent Hill 3? How did you like the experience? McGlynn: I received a tape of the music before rehearsal as well as the initial lyric sheets. We then got together with Mr. Yamaoka and tweaked the lyrics and phrasing. Then we all went into the studio and recorded the songs. I did the background vocals on my songs as well. It was a wonderfully creative process. Mr. Yamaoka and Joe Romersa worked really well together and I think it shows. Question: How did you like working with Akira Yamaoka (Music Composer)? McGlynn: He was wonderful. He helped to create a very trusting atmosphere where we could try different things before finalizing the tracks. I hope I’m lucky enough to work with such a creative, inspirational composer again. His music rocks! Question: What projects are you currently working on? McGlynn: I’m currently writing the English dub for Wolf’s Rain, which I’ll be directing as well. Question: Would you be interested in working on future videogame related projects? McGlynn: Of course! I would be honored to work with such brilliant professionals again. ZRO Limit is probably the best production team I’ve ever worked with and I hope I can keep our relationship going for many years to come. Thank you so much for your time.
