  1. The name of the game's protagonist, Murphy Pendleton, is a reference to "One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest", a novel by Ken Kesey set in Pendleton Mental Institution, Oregon. The main character’s last name in the book is McMurphy.
  2. Howard Blackwood, a character of Silent Hill: Downpour, is also seen in Silent Hill: Past Life comic, which takes place in 1867, and Silent Hill: Book of Memories game.
  3. Streets of the town are, as traditionally for the series, named after various horror genre writers:

  5. The "Hemingway" cigarette packs can be found in various locations in the game, a reference to a memento from Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.
  6. Otherworlds occasionally feature simplistic, Silent Hill: Homecoming style, Halo of the Sun symbols.
  7. Originally, there was going to be a plane crash in Silent Hill: Downpour instead of a bus crash while the protagonist's name was Jack.
  8. The screenplay of the debut SH Downpour trailer is credited to Mira.



  9. An early Downpour trailer published by GameStop Canada featured a boss unused in the final game. The trailer was published by mistake.

Ryall State Prison

  1. Ryall State Prison is named after Chris Ryall, editor of IDW Publishing, who worked on Silent Hill: Past Life.
  2. Murphy's cell number is 302B, a possible reference to Silent Hill 4: The Room where the protagonist was confined in his apartment number 302.

Devil's Pitstop

  1. A radio at the gas station is playing a short fragment of "Magdalene" from SH2.
  2. There's a poster "Have you seen this dog?" at the Gas Station. The dog is found dead on the bed in a motel room at the Devil's Pitstop diner.
  3. There's a wheelchair on the roof of the Gas Station, a reference to Frank Coleridge.
  4. The calendar at the Gas Station is open at August. This could indicate August 2000, 2006 or 2017.
  5. The ad poster for Devil''s Pit at the Aerial Tram Station mentions "Disabled access for whelchair users". A person in the wheelchair on the poster is painted over.
  6. If you use money on the jukebox at Devil's Pitstop, it will play Silent Hill theme from SH1.
  7. The Devil’s Pit flyer features a phrase: "Hey kids: is Silent Hill a special place to you?" This is a possible reference to James and Mary from Silent Hill 2. The town was the special place of the couple.
  8. The grammophone in the Diner's Otherworld plays the song "Born Free" which was also used in the first season of the TV series Dexter. Dan Licht was the composer for both Dexter and Silent Hill: Downpour.
  9. You can see a secret ghostly apparition between the cabins in Devil's Pitstop.

Devil's Pit

  1. If you use binoculars on the observation deck, you can see a couple of cool and scary things: a body hanging from a noose at the edge of the opposite deck, a short scene in the cable car and another scene with the Wheelman on the opposite desk (seen from the lower deck binoculars).
  2. A company which established Devil's Pit Mine is called Gillespie Coal & Iron. This is a reference to the Gillespie family from Silent Hill.
  3. A newspaper article about the train accident, found in the mine, features a statement by Phillip Menton, a tourist from Chicago. This is a reference to Menton3, the artist who worked on Silent Hill: Past Life.
  4. Another wheelchair is on the deck when you exit the lift from the mines.

Pearl Creek

  1. There's an apartment on Lansdale Avenue, which looks almost exactly like Room 302 from Silent Hill 4: The Room. The original apartment was located in the city of South Ashfield.

The Centennial Building

  1. In the parking garage there is an Internal Memorandum, found in the police car, signed by Captain Bryan Handley, a possible reference to Captain Byron Hadley from "The Shawshank Redemption".
  2. There's a hidden message on the wall in the garage's basement revealed in UV light: "Can't keep my head above water".
  3. Wheelman is seen on the monitor when you open the gate to the service elevator.
  4. The rooms of the building have lots of pictures including:
    • "Welcome to Shepherd's Glen" (1st floor, library, room 109), a reference to the town of Shepherd's Glen from Silent Hill: Homecoming
    • "When You Lose Someone You Love" (2nd floor, main hall), a portrait of a girl resembling Alessa
    • "Dangerous Beauty" (1st floor, room 106), a picture of the Doll creature
    • "Demon Samael" (1st floor, office hall), a reference to Samael, the final boss from Silent Hill
    • "Devil's Pitstop" (1st floor, room 103), a picture of the location in the game
    • "Shepherd House" (2nd floor, room 205), a picture of the house of the protagonist's family from Silent Hill: Homecoming
    • "Town Hall" (2nd floor, gallery above offices), a picture of the Centennial Building
    • "Time brings truth" (3rd floor, room 306), a picture of a clocktower
  5. There are many books in the Centennial Building which you can read. Here are some of them:
    • "Classical Civilizations" - 1st floor, library, to the left of the fallen bridge

  6. There's a hidden message on the wall in room 104 revealed in UV light: "Sequestered does not equal safe".
  7. There's a hidden message on the ground in front of the door before entering the radio studio revealed in UV light: "Point of no return".
  8. In the Otherworld of the Centennial Building you can see a girl running across one of the bridges above Murphy while you're sliding down and then Anne Cunningham running across another bridge.

Chastain Heights

  1. Chastain Heights might be a reference to "Misery", a novel by Stephen King, which has a fictional character Misery Chastain.
  2. In the movie theater you can find posters for the movies from Silent Hill: Shattered Memories: "Good Poison" and "Together Forever"
  3. In the newspaper article about abduction of Murphy's son, the officer is listed as Detective Elliot Benson. This is a reference to two police officers from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Elliot Stabler + Olivia Benson = Elliot Benson.

St. Maria's Monastery

  1. UV light reveals a wall message "I keep dreaming about birds" in the strairwell of the Chapel.
  2. Before you enter the orphanage, if you look at the hanging tire, then turn the look away and look back at it, the tire switches to a hanging body of a prisoner.
  3. UV light reveals wall messages "Deep inside" and "So innocent" in a secret room behind the painting in the otherworld theater.
  4. There is a bunch of hidden unfinished dialogs found in the Monastery level. After first talking to the kid behind the locked door, if you go far enough from the door and then return to the spot, a couple of new dialogs will begin.

Pleasant River

  1. The Psychiatrist's Note found in the house related to the “Mirror, Mirror” side quest describes a woman patient who suffers from mental disorder and claims seeing "the people in the mirror". This is very similar to the story of Helen Grady from Silent Hill: Origins.
  2. A dead man from the "Dead Man's Hand" side quest looks like Adam Shepherd from Silent Hill: Homecoming.

Port District

  1. There's a truck with "Ambrose" trailer at the intersection of King Avenue and Ketchum Street. This is a reference to Travis Grady's truck from Silent Hill: Origins who's also seen at the beginning of Silent Hill: Homecoming.
  2. A boat bearing the name "Angela's fire" can be seen next to the "Freedom" boat. A possible reference to Angela Orosco from Silent Hill 2.

Overlook Penitentiary

  1. The name of the prison is a reference to "The Shining", a novel by Stephen King. The novel takes place at the Overlook Hotel.

Endings

  1. "Surprise!" ending features characters and monsters from previous Silent Hill games: James, Mary, Laura, Pyramid Head and nurses from SH2 as well as Heather from SH3.
