Psychical Research Article

Description: An article from a magazine in Andy's Bookstore at Katz St.

In March of 1965, the town of Silent Hill was visited by the Maine Psychical Research Association.

After thorough examination, a team of expert dowsers from the Association concluded the area surrounding the now-historic Wiltse Coal Mine to be “highly active”. They also expressed their hopes for further research and exploration of the gorge.

These hopes, however, were never fulfilled due to the location being restricted as a historic nature preserve, as declared by the Silent Hill Historical Society.

Additionally, the idea was met with resistance from the local community, which claimed that the nature of the Association’s research would hinder tourist activity in the area. “Questioning the credibility of our research and hiding behind day-trippers seems like an excuse to prevent us from seeing what's really out there," commented one of the researchers.

Unfortunately, none of the local representatives were available to comment on the matter.

Editor’s note: At the time of publishing, there exist no evidence supporting credibility of radiesthesia, or proving effectiveness of any dowsing methods. Opinions expressed in the article do not reflect the author's views.

Searching for Another Conclusion Vol. I: The Road to Tomorrow

It’s better to prevent than to cure, as the old maxim tells us. Taking care of yourself and maintaining a healthy outlook can be a challenge in these fast, modern times. The key is to not beat yourself up over past mistakes and avoid those who would do you harm. Sometimes, it is better to avoid confrontation instead of engaging in pointless conflict. Try to stay clear of toxic relationships and focus instead on your friends and loved ones. Keep your eyes on the prize and focus on what really matters. Can it be that simple? Yes! Look to the future - it might be brighter than you think.

Searching for Another Conclusion Vol. II: Getting the Girl

Do you love her? Do you really love her? In sickness and in health? Words are simple enough, but actions speak the loudest. Would you protect her? Fight for her? Put her above any other? Remember, now she is the one. Leave the past behind and forget about old relationships that ended in tears. Be true to your heart and with luck, things will work out in the end.

Searching for Another Conclusion Vol. III (New Game+ Only)

Description: One of the books in Andy's Bookstore at Katz St.

Searching for Another Conclusion Vol. III: Choosing Death

When life is filled with nothing but despair, some people choose to end it all. I once chose that path for myself as well. I embraced it. It felt right. Like the only choice I could possibly make. After I made my decision, it became the only thing binding me to this world. I became reckless. I did stupid, dangerous things. I pushed away even those who cared about me. After all, why would it matter anymore?

LOCANE SIBLINGS MURDER: PERPETRATOR COMMITS SUICIDE IN CUSTODY

Walter Sullivan, the culprit in a recent homicide case, was found dead having taken his own life on the morning of the 22nd in his jail cell.

According to the police statement, Sullivan's death was caused by blood loss resulting from severing his carotid artery with a soup spoon buried two inches in his neck.

Sullivan was apprehended on the 18th of this month on account of brutally murdering Billy and Miriam Locane.

Even though Walter Sullivan did not strike a former schoolmate from his hometown of Pleasant River as someone capable of murdering children, the schoolmate admits to having witnessed Sullivan in a state of severe paranoia shortly before his arrest.

"He was blurting out all sorts of strange stuff like 'He's trying to kill me. He's trying to punish me. The monster...the red devil. Forgive me. I did it, but it wasn't me!'" he recounts.

"I guess now that I think of it, he was kind of crazy," the schoolmate concludes.

MASS LAYOFFS AT BROOKHAVEN HOSPITAL THREATEN THE INSTITUTION’S FUTURE

The layoffs we reported on last month are continuing. Over ten people have been let go, which has reduced the hospital's staff by more than half. If the situation does not improve, staff shortages will put patients at risk.

Brookhaven is a hospital with a long history. It was established in 1810 when a deadly epidemic swept through the Silent Hill area. Ever since, it has incessantly brought help to the residents of the town. However, more and more have made their voices heard of how the presence of a psychiatric hospital in the middle of the town has a negative impact on the local community. Residents fear that an incident from two years ago might repeat itself.

Doctors' Lounge Diary

This case bears a disturbing similarity to a situation that took place in the facility a few years back. The patient was admitted on a court order, but with the consent of his remaining family. His condition appeared to be improving for the first few weeks. The administered medications paired with individual sessions with a psychologist and art therapy alleviated his avolition, anhedonia, and social withdrawal. There was no reason for concern. They didnt even know anything was wrong until the night guard reported one of his keys was missing. When they found him, it was already too late.

Doctor's Journal

Description: A journal on the desk in the Reception Office

The potential for this illness exists in all people and, under the right circumstances, any man or woman would be driven, like him, to the 'other side'.

The 'other side' perhaps may not be the best way to phrase it.
After all, there is no wall between here and there. It lies on the borders where reality and unreality intersect. It is a place both close and distant.

Some say it isn't even an illness. I cannot agree with them. I'm a doctor, not a philosopher or even a psychiatrist, unlike the Director.

But sometimes I have to ask myself this question. It's true that to us his imaginings are nothing but the inventions of a busy mind. But to him, there simply is no other reality.
Furthermore, he is happy there.

So why, I ask myself, why in the name of healing him must we drag him painfully into the world of our own reality?

The Lady of the Light Legend

Description: A book in the Historical Society.

among the local legends is that of the Lady of the Light. The story tells of a woman who was accused and found guilty of witchcraft. As punishment, she was taken to a small island out on the lake - a miniscule stretch of rocky soil, devoid of any food, or shelter. There, she was to suffer a slow, excruciating death, as her body succumbed to cold and hunger.

However, unbeknownst to the rest of the townsfolk, there was a young man among them, who - having gazed into the woman’s eyes, as bright and beautiful as a midsummer’s moon - had vowed undying love for her. When she was convicted, wrongly, as he believed, he swore that he would not let her suffer such cruel fate. While waiting for an opportunity to abscond with his beloved, every night, he would sneak out and row across the lake, bringing her food and something to keep her warm. And every night, the woman would stand there, on the shore, holding a lit candle, to help him find his way.

But then, one night, when the sky was exceptionally clear, devoid of even a wisp of cloud, the young man set out on his nightly escapade. As always, he would look out into the distance, looking for the light in the darkness that would lead him to his beloved. On that night, however, the moon shone so bright and so vibrant, stronger than any candle could. Seeing the light’s reflection in the water, the young man was led astray. He rowed, and rowed, and rowed, following the reflected light, hoping against hope he could reach it. He did not care for his aching arms, or the shortness of his breath, utterly mesmerized by the illusory light. When his boat tipped over, the man was so exhausted from rowing, so weakened were his arms, that he was not able to swim to shore. Thus, he succumbed to a watery grave.

Although left alone, the woman on the island never lost hope. She kept coming out at night, and kept lighting the candle. The legend says that those looking for true love can still see the Lady’s light out on the lake, shining to bring her beloved home.

While the story is clearly meant as a metaphor and a cautionary tale, it is, to a certain extent, rooted in reality, as the area has indeed seen its share of religious persecution, such as that of

The prisoners do not feel remorse. In fact, they do not feel themselves to be sinful at all.

For no matter how foul and loathsome one's existence may be, human nature abides.

Magazine Article

In the center of Silent Hill lies
the town's major tourist attraction,
Toluca Lake.
But there’s a darker side to this
scenic, beautiful reservoir.

What may seem a bread-and-butter
local ghost story you’ve heard time
and time again,
in this case, rings surprisingly true.

One fateful, fog-bound November day in
1918, a tourist cruiser called Little Baroness,
has set sail never to dock again.

Newspaper articles reporting the event
contain no details of the ship’s disappearance.
Despite an extensive police search, neither
a single fragment of the ship nor
the remains of the passengers or the crew
have ever been recovered.

But in 1939, an even more bizarre incident
has taken place.

[Many pages are missing, torn out]

Many corpses rest at the bottom
of this lake. Their bony hands
stretch out toward the boats that
pass overhead. Perhaps they
reach for their comrades.

Restored Text:

The body of a man later identified as Thomas Orosco (Lumberjack, age 39) was discovered in the middle of the room lying face up.

The probable cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the front of the neck and the left side of the torso by a sharp edged weapon. The estimated time of death was somewhere between 11:00 p.m. and 12:30 midnight.

Due to signs of struggle in the room and the lack of a murder weapon, police are considering this a homicide and have opened a murder investigation.

Furthermore, given the fact that the cash in the room was untouched and Mr. Orosco had a history of drunkenness and violence, the police suspect that the motive was not robbery but some sort of crime of passion.

Mary's Letter

Description: Complete text of Mary's letter as narrated in the "Leave" and "In Water" endings.

In my restless dreams, I see that town.
Silent Hill.

You promised me you'd take me there again someday.
But you never did.

Well, I'm alone there now... In our special place... Waiting for you to come to see me.
But you never do.

So I wait. Wrapped in my cocoon of pain and loneliness.

I know I've done a terrible thing to you.
I wish I could change that. But I can't.
I feel so pathetic and ugly laying here.
Every day I stare up at the cracks in the ceiling.
And all I can think about is how unfair it is.

The doctor came today.
Told me I could go home for a short stay.
It’s not that I'm getting better.
It’s just that this could be my last chance.
Even so, I'm glad to be coming home.
I've missed you so much.

But I'm afraid, James.
I'm afraid you don't really want me to come home.
Every time you come to see me, I can tell how hard it is on you.
I don't know if you hate me, or pity me.
Or maybe I just disgust you.

I'm so sorry.
When I first learned I was gonna die, I couldn't accept it.
I was so angry. I struck out at everyone I loved. Especially you.
That's why I understand if you hate me. But I want you to know...

I will always love you.
Even though our life together had to end like this...
I still wouldn't trade it for the world.

Well, this letter has gone on too long. So I'll say goodbye.
I told the nurse to give this to you after I'm gone.
Which means that, as you read this, I'm already dead.
But that's okay. I'm not afraid of it anymore.
I just hope the pain will end soon.
So that you remember me for who I was.
And not what the disease made me.

I want you to go on.
I want you to live.
For yourself and for others.
Like you did for me.

James... You made me happy.
