Shu

Note from Shu

Description: A note Shu wrote to me. It was attached to the box of capsules he gave me.

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 1, received during the cutscene when you first meet Shu.

Hey partner,

These painkillers should work best for you. They'll not only take care of your headaches, but also any pain from injuries.

I suspect that the main cause behind your nasty headaches is from you unconsciously grinding your teeth when you're upset. Does that sound about right?

If you ever need to talk or anything, just call my name, and I'll be there!

Prescription for My Partner

Description: This was written as a prescription, but Shu seems to have mixed in his private thoughts too.

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 4, on a desk inside the shed next to Shu's house.

Hinako began complaining of headaches in middle school.

When I tried pinpointing their root cause, things always seemed to come back to stress arising from her poor relationship with her father. In other words, she is suffering from tension headaches.

I first recommended that she use over-the-counter medicine, but soon, she started asking for them more and more often.

I don't like the thought of Hinako developing a reliance on such drugs. So, I switched her to traditional Chinese medicine that uses kudzu root and peony as it should put less of a strain on her body.

That said, I know the real reason she comes around so often isn't just because she's looking for medicine, but for a place to air her grievances about her father.

As my grandmother always said, you can greatly improve the flow of someone's chi simply by listening to their troubles and empathizing with them.

Hinako was thrilled with the medicine I gave her and said it worked wonders, but the truth is that wasn't the medicine alone.

I want to hear out all her troubles and concerns. I mean, that's my job as her partner, right?

Shu's Childhood Diary

Description: A page from Shu's childhood journal. This entry is from the day we truly became one another's partner.

Location: ?

I made a promise to myself. I am never EVER going to treat Hinako like a girl!

My older cousin who's a girl told me that some girls don't want to be treated like they're girls. And Hinako's my partner! Not a girl!

So if anyone tries to treat her like a girl, I'll kick their butts!

(It looks like Shu was trying his best to write neatly.)

Letter to My Partner

Description: A letter to me. The envelope has a stamp on it. I guess he was going to send this.

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 4 (NG+), automatically obtained when taking the Front Door Keys To Shu's House if you haven't consumed the Red Capsules throughout the game or picked up any in the shed.

Hey there, partner.

We've made it out of some pretty vicious battles together, huh?
Even had to part ways with our fair share of comrades on the battlefield.

I just never thought we'd have to part ways too.

But at least ours won't be a goodbye through death on the battlefield.

From now on, you can't ask for anything from me, okay? 'Cause it's not like I can expect your help anymore.

You have to look after yourself now.
I won't be there to drag you to safety when you fall.

But wherever we go and no matter what we do, we'll always be a part of the Space Army!

And we'll always be partners, got it?

Thanks for everything, Hinako.

Rinko

Letter from Rinko to Hinako

Description: Looks like Rinko's handwriting...

#1

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a bench in the Chizuruya General Store.

Hinako,

Here, you'll feel better after eating this.

Forget what those jerks said today!
And don't worry, they'll be getting an earful from me!

You just have to be yourself, Hinako.
You can't worry about what other people say is normal. That's their normal, not yours!

I'll always be looking out for you.

From your best friend,
Rinko

#2

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a bench in the Chizuruya General Store after flipping the lamp's switch.

Hinako,

Here, you'll feel better after eating this.

(The handwriting from here becomes erratic and emotional.)

I'm such a kind person, you know.
Would someone who isn't kind give little treats with a wonderful message to their sad friend?!
I am so kind!

You just have to be yourself, Hinako.

Because whenever I'm by your side, I realize what an amazing person I am.
Whenever I help you out, it makes me realize how kind I am.

I'll always be looking out for both you and Sakuko.
Because when I look after you two pitiful creatures, it makes me feel so superior. Like a teacher or a parent—or pet owner even!

From your best friend,
Rinko

#3

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG++), on top of the sweets in the middle of the Chizuruya General Store.

When I think about it, I guess my family was pretty well-off.
I always got tons of allowance.
The candy store was where I could demonstrate just how much better I was than you all.

Getting caught up in that feeling of superiority when I bought some sweets for a poor kid was the start of everything going wrong.
The start of my hideous transformation into someone who looks down on and berates others.

When everyone is beneath you, there's no longer anyone to talk to as an equal.
I stopped being able to confide and open up to people.
In a way, I even stopped being able to argue with anyone properly.

So, that's why I'm grateful that you argued with me, even on a day like today.
Today was the first time in my life that I felt like you accepted me as your friend.
You can't even imagine how happy that made me.

So, Hinako, from the bottom of my heart, congratulations! I'm so happy for you!

Class Observation Log

Description: This log serves as a record of the day-to-day happenings in the classroom.

#1

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a shelf in the corner of the classroom.

In continuation from last semester, I'm to be class president once again. I hope we can make this another wonderful semester. The role of class president holds a lot of responsibilities, but I think I'm up to the task.

Even when I was young, I always wanted to be the mom or big sister whenever I played house. I think it's because I really enjoy looking after others.

I believe that every single student in our class has things they excel in, as well as things they could stand to work on.

In my view, the purpose of a class president is to help others with their shortcomings so we can make school an enjoyable place for everyone.

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a shelf in the corner of the classroom after flipping the lamp's switch.

In continuation from last semester, I'm to be class president once again. I hope we can make this another wonderful semester.

(The handwriting turns wild and erratic.)

I love being class president because I get to look after all these lost causes.

Even when I was young, I always enjoyed comparing myself to other, inferior kids and basking in my own superiority. When I pretend to care about others, I can please a lot of people. The losers I help, the people around me, and even my parents. And frankly, that makes me happy as well.

Right now, I'm in charge of two girls who are the definition of morons. They're both so carefree and empty-headed. Neither of them knows the first thing about fitting in. The only reason they have any friends at all in class is because I'm taking care of them.

They fawn over me and tell me all the time how grateful they are. It feels amazing.
I really, truly think that I was born to be class president.

Comments from the Teacher:

Thank you for always fulfilling your duties as class president.

You do a great job looking after and supporting your classmates. I've also heard you're taking the initiative to give advice to underclassmen as well.

It's a wonderful thing that you're so dedicated to your role as class president. However, I believe it would be beneficial if you interacted with them not only as their class president, but as a classmate as well.

Instead of solely teaching and supporting them, try treating them as equals. In doing so, I hope you can open up more and have your classmates get to know the real you.

Crumpled Letter

Description: A letter that was wadded up. It looks like the writer got frustrated and gave up halfway.

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on the ground near the stacks of books in Rinko's room.

I love you.
So much.

You never leave my thoughts.

(The writing stops here.)

I know this is none of my business, but... could you keep your distance from Shu?

You know, people tend to get the wrong idea when boys and girls our age spend too much time together. And you don't want to cause any issues for Shu, do you?

You should really think more about how you beha—

(The letter ends here abruptly.)

You're nothing but a fly.

All you do is get in the way. Get lost. Or at the very least, shut your trap and stop bothering others.

And quit buzzing around Shu all the damn time!

Rinko's Childhood Diary

Description: Rinko's diary from when she was a little kid.

#1

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a countertop among the sweets.

Today, I bought all my friends candy from the candy store.
It's a lot more fun to eat with friends than to eat alone.

#2

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a countertop among the sweets after flipping the light.

Today, I bought all my friends candy from the candy store.

(The handwriting turns oddly distorted.)

Everyone was slobbering over the snacks and thanking me again and again.

It reminded me of the time I fed fish at the park, the way their mouths gaped wide as they begged for food.
What a bunch of idiots.

And that poor-as-dirt Hinako? All it took was one piece of cheap candy to have her following me around like a dog.
It's almost cute how stupid she is.

A cockroach like her deserves to die!

Rinko's Diary

Description: Pages from Rinko's diary I've found scattered about. The contents are a little concerning...

#1

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG++), on top of the boxes on the northern side of the Chizuruya General Store after flipping the lamp's switch.

I've always looked down on Hinako and Sakuko. That's why I've never been able to expose my weaknesses to them. How am I supposed to share the depths of my heart with mere insects?

Maybe if I had treated them as equals, I could have actually told Hinako the truth.

About my feelings. Or his feelings.
Maybe if we could have actually fought—really, truly fought—then I wouldn't have to feel the way I do now.

Tomorrow is Hinako's oh-so-special day.
But you know what? Maybe I'll give in.
Maybe I'll tell her how much I actually hate her.

(The handwriting here turns into a disturbing scrawl.)

You LIED to me. You BETRAYED Shu.
I will destroy you. I'm going to beat you bloody, then tear you limb from limb.
Why won't you just do everyone a favor and just—

(I can't make out what the rest says...)

#2

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a desk in the second row in the classroom.

I've wasted years of my life at school carefully putting on the good-girl act. Pretending I was perfect in every way. Basking in my own sense of superiority.

Back then, I sincerely believed I was better than everyone else.

But things are different now. I can see how I've been looking down on others just to falsely raise myself up.

I can't help but wonder, though... Has everyone else seen through my act this whole time?

Hinako. Sakuko. Even Shu.
Maybe they've always seen through me, straight to my rotten core. Maybe all this time, they were only pretending to be my friends.

(The handwriting is seething with unfettered hatred.)

But I'm not the one at fault! It's all because of that awful HINAKO!
If only you were gone, then I wouldn't be feeling like this!

(The rest is too distorted to read from here...)

#3

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), in a cubby on the eastern side of the classroom after flipping the lamp's switch.

I should have never pretended to be something I wasn't. If I hadn't, then I would have been able to look Hinako in the eye. I could have told her what I really think of her. Put her in her place.

But I've let everything sit and fester. And now, the wound has turned necrotic.

So even though this is the day all my wildest dreams are coming true, my heart still feels heavy.

(The handwriting is chaotic and full of violent energy.)

This is the bed I made, so I'll lie in it.

But I won't ever, EVER forgive you for what you did to Shu! How DARE you hurt him!

Shu may not cry or scream at you like I know he wants to, but I'll make you feel his pain all the same!

#4

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a southern shelf below one of the dolls in Rinko's room.

How arrogant I've been.

I realize now that the hatred and envy I felt towards Hinako for having a boy who loved her far outweighed my own love for Shu.

I really am stupid, aren't I? Hinako always said that she and Shu weren't dating. And yet...

I wasted such a valuable opportunity. I could have asked her so much about him.

What does Shu like?
What does Shu care about?
What does Shu think about me?

I could have asked her all of this, but I didn't.
Instead, I stewed in my own jealousy. Like an idiot.

#5

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG++), in a cubby on the eastern side of the classroom after flipping the lamp's switch.

I'm sure the teachers have seen right through me. They know the truth—that I am friendless in the truest sense of the word.

I think I've been doing it unconsciously all this time. Looking for someone I can say that I'm helping, but am really just looking down on.

Hinako and Sakuko and Shu have never stopped calling me their friend. But I don't think I ever earned that...

Fox Origami

Description: Colored origami paper folded into the shape of a fox. There was a popular rumor at school that if you folded the paper like this, your wish would come true.

#1

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a countertop among the sweets in the Chizuruya General Store after flipping the lamp's switch.

All of a sudden, the town was enveloped in a thick fog. Everywhere I looked, I saw strange monsters.
I could only bring myself to sit inside my empty house, alone and shaking...

That's when Shu came and rescued me. After that, it didn't matter how terrifying the outside world was, so long as I was able to spend time alone with Shu.

(The handwriting suddenly turns frightening...)

But then, I realized that cockroach Hinako was with him! What are the odds?!

Just die, you pest! You don't belong in this town anymore. Did you forget that?!

#2

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a countertop among the sweets in the Chizuruya General Store.

(The handwriting here is erratic.)

Hinako! Why are you here?! This was supposed to be my chance to talk to Shu alone!

Why the hell are you here, and why the hell are you cozying up next to Shu like that's where you belong?!

And the cherry on top? Sakuko decided to tag along too, just because of you!

But I can forgive her. I mean, she did me the favor of dying soon enough anyway.

How long are you going to keep living for? You're already dead!

Quit haunting Ebisugaoka like some pathetic ghost!

#3

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG++), in a cubby at the southern end of the classroom.

(The handwriting suggests that this was written in a fit of rage.)

All I wanted was to be by Shu's side, but you just kept getting in my way! Why were you always right there?!

You were seriously like a fly, buzzing around Shu nonstop!

You were such a nuisance! I wanted to strangle you! So be glad that I didn't end up murdering you!

Even if I killed you one hundred times, that STILL wouldn't be enough to express how much I despise you!

Looking back on it now, I think I hated myself so much for being a coward that I just used you as an excuse. I won't do that anymore.

From now on, I won't blame others for why I'm miserable. I'll take my happiness into my own hands.

(...The handwriting's back to normal.)

Rinko's Secret Journal

Description: Pages from Rinko's diary I've found scattered about. Most of them seem to be about Shu...

#1

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a crate at the back of the Chizuruya General Store.

Why do I have to live here of all places?

Shu lives all the way on the other side of town. Meaning my dream of us walking home together will never come true.

I remember how I organized everyone from class to go to Chizuruya together after school. We chatted as we walked, then went our separate ways home.

The walk to the store was painfully short. Still, having just a few extra minutes that I could spend with Shu outside of school was all I could have asked for.

#2

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a crate at the back of the Chizuruya General Store after flipping the lamp's switch.

As we got closer to the store, our classmates would peel off one by one as they turned to go home. It was never just me and Shu on our own, but I didn't care.

(The handwriting here grows erratic and emotional.)

But of course, there was always a dirty little cockroach crawling all over Shu!

I mean, come on! We're all walking home together. How about having a conversation that everyone else can join in on?!
Don't just go running off to your own little weird Space Wars world together!

#3

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on the ground in the corner of Rinko's room.

I wish I could live in a world where it's just Shu and me. But I don't mean that I want the rest of town to disappear.

No, what I truly want is a world where Shu and I can bask together in the spotlight, with everyone else standing in the background as our supporting characters.
I don't suppose there's a spell I could cast that would create such a dream world?

#4

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on the ground in the corner of Rinko's room after flipping the lamp's switch.

I wish I could live in a world where it's just Shu and me. But I don't mean that I want the rest of town to disappear.

(The handwriting turns erratic and distorted.)

NO. What I truly want is a world where that NASTY little cockroach named Hinako who's always crawling around Shu is GONE.

I don't care how it happens. She can die in an accident. Or of some rare disease. Hell, she can just move to some far-off country for all I care.

I just want her GONE. FOREVER.
Won't any of the gods answer my prayers?!

#5

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG++), on a shelf in the southeastern corner in Rinko's room after flipping the lamp's switch.

I'm in love with you, Shu.

I've loved you from the first moment I saw you.
From the first moment our eyes met.
From the first moment we first spoke.
I've loved you all this time.

(The handwriting here reflects the writer's terrifying instability...)

I love you. I'll do anything for you.

I am yours, body and soul. Do you want my liver? My kidneys? My still-beating heart? I'll crack open my ribs and pull it out for you, if that's what you want.

I want to slurp down your intestines. To feel them slide across my tongue.

I want to cut off the top of our heads and mash our brains together. I'll turn them into a nice soup.

Then, I'll drink that soup. I'll feed it to you mouth to mouth.

Next, we can chew up our tongues and feed them to one another.

(I don't have the slightest idea what the rest says...)

Balled-Up Notebook Paper

Description: A manuscript that the writer gave up on halfway.

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG++), behind a pile of books in Rinko's room.

I've been blessed with an easy life. Happy, with kind parents who are well-off. I never doubted myself. Not even once.

But then one day, I met you, lost and alone as you were. And then I felt contempt. Irritation. Disgust. Envy.

Now that I think about it, you taught me all the emotions children are supposed to learn during childhood. If not for you, I might have stayed a big fish, content in my happy little pond.

Now, I've outgrown Ebisugaoka. That is the gift you gave me. So today, what I really want to say to you is, thank you.

No, I can't read this in front of other people. Start over.

Sakuko

Letter from Sakuko's Mother

Description: A letter from a worried mother to her daughter.

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 3, on the ground in front one of the stone shrines at Sennensugi Shrine.

Dear Sakuko,

You mustn't ever speak again about how you hear otherworldly voices talking or singing.

Puberty is a difficult time. You may hear and see strange things that you can't explain.

The same thing happened to me when I was your age.

However, it's nothing more than your imagination playing tricks on you.

If your friends find out, though, they'll label you "the strange girl." They'll abandon you, ostracize you.

Because around here, once rumors spread, people will never look at you the same again.

Letter from the Hospital

Description: A letter containing Sakuko's test results.

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 2, inside the Igarashi residence's mailbox. Collect the Key to Sakuko’s Mailbox at the Sennensugi Shrine to the left of the main gate. Backtrack all the way to the Chizuruya General Store, then head north to Sakuko's house, where you first met her. Open the residence's mailbox with the key.

Prefectural University Hospital
Department of Psychiatry

Mr./Mrs. Igarashi,

Test Results

We have compiled the test results for Igarashi Sakuko below.

1. Results
No abnormalities found.

2. Observation
Shows characteristics of mild autism; all other test results were within normal range.

3. Notes
It is not unusual for pubescent children to claim they can see and hear things that are not real. As they mature, these issues tend resolve themselves on their own, so I believe there is no need for concern.

Regarding her fear of the dark, her response is proper and natural. Continuing to scold her may only worsen her condition.

Please do not trouble yourself over Sakuko. Simply raise her with love and affection, and let her mature at her own pace.

Sakuko's Parent-Teacher Journal

Description: This journal contains a message from Sakuko's parents to her teacher.

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a desk in Sakuko's room.

Just a note.

As Sakuko's mother, I want to thank you for teaching my daughter.

I wanted to apologize for what happened the other day on the field trip. It seems Sakuko caused a lot of trouble.

My daughter has been that way ever since she was young. As a child, she always hated when we turned off the lights to go to bed, and she avoided dark movie theaters and tunnels like the plague. I mistakenly thought that she had overcome her fear of the dark, now that she is grown-up.

I believe the reason her fear came back during the field trip is because she is unaccustomed to sleeping in a different environment.

I gave her a stern talking-to for behaving so shamefully at her age. She has since reflected on her behavior and is sorry for how she acted. Please accept both her and my apologies.

Sakuko's Diary

Description: Pages from Sakuko's diary I've found scattered about. The contents are a little concerning...

#1

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a shelf in the northwestern room.

I hate the dark.

It reminds me that I'm all alone.

Everyone's always telling me that I'm a little weird. That I'm a bit strange.

I'm the weird kid who's always by herself.

I can forget my loneliness at school, inside a classroom full people chatting away.
In the dark, however, it comes creeping back.

(The handwriting here turns erratic and emotional.)

I know the truth. I know what Hinako REALLY thinks of me. She thinks I'm weird, just like all the others.

I know it's true. I know she's making fun of me behind my back.

Does she think they don't badmouth her when she's not around?!
I can't stand the fact that she puts on a fake smile and acts like she's the only normal one, all while looking down on me!
She makes me so mad! I hate her! I hate her so much!

#2

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a bench in the locker room.

I hate gym class. Just looking at my gym clothes makes me depressed.

They're holding a long-distance race at school soon. I know it's just an excuse for them to watch me come in last and laugh at me.

I knew how lonely I would feel if everyone just left me in the dust, so I asked Rinko if she would hang back so we could run across the finish line together. And you know what? She said yes!

I asked Hinako too.

But she said no.

She said it's because she's in a sports club, and she'll get yelled at by the teacher if she doesn't try her best.

Well, I suppose that makes sense. If it's true.

(The handwriting suddenly turns erratic.)

But I know the truth.
I know it's really because you don't want to be held back by a slowpoke like me.

I hope Hinako trips and falls and breaks all the bones in her body so she can never run again!

#3

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall, on a cabinet in the corner of the eastern room.

My family has served as caretakers of Sennensugi Shrine for generations. But for the past few decades, the shrine's popularity has been on the decline.
When it came time for my dad to become the head priest, he declined the role and got a regular office job instead.

Mom and Dad are always saying negative things about the shrine, that head priests are obsolete. Even my grandfather says that the tradition of upkeeping Sennensugi Shrine will die with his generation.

I help out as a miko at the shrine whenever an event's held.

I love how dignified the rituals are and the way they make me feel like my soul is being cleansed.

I'd like to be more than just a helper at the shrine. I think I'd like to become head priest one day.

#4

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a bench in the locker room.

I normally hate gym class.

But today was different. Something nice happened.

(The handwriting here is erratic, as if overcome with emotion.)

Little Miss Perfect tripped and fell today.
Looks like even Hinako the star athlete can mess up!

She scraped her knee and started bleeding.
I wish she had fallen flat on her face and ruined that pretty nose of hers, too!

#5

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a cabinet in the corner of the eastern room.

Grandpa is saying that he'll let the shrine come to an end after his generation. Not many people bother visiting such a small, insignificant shrine.
It seems nobody wants to go to the effort of coming all the way here to pray to Inari-sama.

There are hokora and statues dedicated to Inari-sama all over town, anyway. Older folks just go wherever's closest to them to pray. There's no reason for them to come to the shrine.

But if there were more devout worshippers... If people held more respect for the shrine... Then maybe Sennensugi Shrine could be restored to its former glory.

Are these just events unfolding as the gods have planned, just like Grandpa always says? Does Sennensugi Shrine no longer serve a purpose?

No, it simply can't be true. I've heard how the gods weep.

#6

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on top of the shelves in the corner in Sakuko's room.

I had a strange dream. It was about a very old sword. One that was cursed. Steeped in evil energy.

The sword must be the source of the corrupt god's power. I'm sure of it. But because the sword itself is divine, it can't be destroyed.

However, if someone were to purify it, then surely the corrupt god could be weakened.

If the sword can be submerged in the elixir that exorcises evil spirits, then it could be used to sever the strings that control those who roam lost through the fog.

#7

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a cabinet in the corner of the eastern room.

I had a strange dream last night.
In it, a god appeared before me and commanded me to restore Sennensugi Shrine to its former glory.

I had a strange dream today. In it, someone told me that I mustn't restore Sennensugi Shrine.

They must be revelations from opposing gods.

But I already know my answer. Because my dream is to restore Sennensugi Shrine too.

The god who spoke to me yesterday said that there is an evil deity who has robbed them of their shrine.

The god who spoke to me today said that the shrine had been used to worship an evil being, causing it to fall out of use.

If I'm going to be forced to make a choice, then I will put my trust in the god who visited me yesterday.

However, when I told the god from today that, they said this.

(The handwriting here looks nothing like Sakuko's...)

Foolish maiden. You wish to serve a malevolent god.

I shall crush that empty head of yours.

#8

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG++), on a bench in the locker room.

Hinako really is fast when she goes all out. But when we're running together during gym class, she'll slow her pace down to match mine.

The second she can go her own speed, though, she takes off with this look of unrestrained joy on her face.

I always said that we had to do everything together. Get boyfriends together. Even get married together.

Those were the selfish wishes of a child.

Just like I'm a slow runner and Hinako is fast, people have to live life at their own pace.
Just because Hinako's moving a bit faster than me doesn't mean she's betraying me.

I was jealous, and I couldn't even admit that to myself.

Hey! Mr. Rabbit! Guess what?

I made my first ever friend today!
Her name is Shimizu Hinako.

But Mr. Rabbit... she's my first ever real-life human friend. So, I'm a little scared.

What if she throws me away and forgets me?

I'm so so so scared of that happening...

When I told my new bestest friend Hinako this, she said she'd never ever EVER abandon me. Not EVER. She promised me.

But you know what Mr. Rabbit?

(The handwriting here suddenly turns erratic.)

What if Hinako breaks her promise? What if she betrays me? What if she's LYING?!

No no no no no no no.
I don't wanna think about that.

Hinako said she wouldn't ever leave me. She PROMISED.

I have to believe

Hinako.

If you betray me, you'll pay.

I'll make you pay and regret ever hurting me.

Got it?

Hey. Mr. Rabbit. Guess what?

I've decided that today, I'm giving you a new name.

(The handwriting here is erratic, as if the writer was overcome with emotion.)

Your new name is Hinako. Got it? Hinako.

Don't you think it's super cute?

It's the same name as that awful, horrible, mean, cruel Hinako who left me all by myself and went far far away. I hate her!

I know why she threw me away. It's cause I'm dark and sad and mean.

Dang it. I forgot the stuff I needed to cut off Hinako's arms and legs.
Oh well. I'll just cut her into tiny pieces tomorrow.

#3

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG++), inside the rabbit hatch.

Hey. Mr. Rabbit. Guess what?

I heard Hinako's gonna go somewhere far far away. And she might never ever come back.

I'm so alone... and sad...

No! No frowns allowed. It's a good thing! I gotta smile as I say goodbye to Hinako.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna show Hinako my biggest, widest grin when I tell her how happy I am for her.

Letter of Concern

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), on a bench next to the shrine in the eastern room.

Dear Hinako,

Good luck and bad luck are two sides of the same coin.
For one person, today could be lucky, but for someone else it might be the opposite.

Right now, a bright sun shines upon you.
But that sun also makes your shadow very long and dark.

Dark shadows draw evil toward them.

I really didn't want to send you a letter like this on your special day, but I just couldn't get it off my mind.

I sense that your fortune has taken a turn for the worse.
There's just something not right about the sun and the shadow that surround you.

Where are you, Hinako?
This should be a day for celebration, yet you're—

But surgery can do more harm than good. Remember how mother never properly recovered after hers?

I understand how you feel, I really do. But please reconsider before taking on debt for an operation that might not even make her better.

Kotoyuki and the Tsuneki Family

Housemaid's Note

Description: A maid for a certain prominent family wrote this. It contains many rumors.

#1

Location: ?

The Tsunekis are the most notable family in this area and are known for their wealth.

For generations, each head of the family has possessed a talent for business—an acumen they have utilized during times of social unrest to amass a large fortune.

However, given that a great many suffered while they grew rich, their actions have often drawn envious eyes.

When I first entered into service for the Tsunekis, my grandmother shared some of the many rumors that swirl around the family:
"Each time the world falls to pieces, the Tsunekis' treasury only grows larger."
"The Tsunekis are happily waiting for misfortune to strike so they can line their pockets."

#2

Location: ?

Shortly after I became their maid, there was talk of an arranged marriage for the young heir to a noblewoman.

This led to the heir unceremoniously ending all his scandalous relationships with women, including one with a young housemaid named Sachie.

Sachie came from a family of poor farmers, but her beauty shone brighter than the sun—something that had caught the young heir's eye. By the time his marriage was being arranged, she already had a life growing inside her, and the two had made vows to run away and start a new life together.

And yet, the young heir cruelly and wantonly cast her aside. Likely, he simply did not want his prospective marriage to be ruined.

So, the Tsunekis kicked Sachie out and drove her to some far-off place where they could forget her existence, despite the piece of the family she carried with her.

People say that she was fighting back tears so hard that blood began to trickle from her eyes.

#3

Location: ?

However, the child she carried was unmistakably a descendant of the Tsunekis, and their blood lies in wait for tragedy to strike.

It is only a matter of time before that child exacts their revenge.

I believe that the next time there is turmoil within the Tsuneki family, that child will make their move.

Good morning, my handsome boy.

You are different from those delinquents who run around town. You have noble blood running through your veins.
Of course, every child must play in order to grow, but I simply ask that you choose wisely who you play with.

You must think of me as awfully overbearing, but please respect my wishes while you are still young.
For when you are grown up, you will be free to do as you please.

Good morning, my handsome boy.

Even if you find yourself poor of pocket, you must never let yourself become poor of heart.
You mustn't forget that you have inherited your father's noble blood.

You must study hard and learn to be a gentleman.
Do not think of yourself as a little boy, for you are simply a tiny adult waiting to grow.

There will come a day when your father shall require your help, mark my words.

#3

Location: ?

Good morning, my handsome boy.

Your real last name is Tsuneki.
It is told that those of the Tsuneki lineage are destined to bring good fortune when the world is in disorder.

In fact, that is how your father earned succession to the Tsuneki lineage.
And you, who have inherited your father's noble blood, are sure to be next in line.

To make your name, I took one character from your father's name and one character from mine.
That way, when anyone from the Tsuneki family hears your name, they will immediately know you are our child.

#4

Good morning, my handsome boy.

I have good news.
Indeed, good news to a Tsuneki is always accompanied by the news of someone else's death.

Old Medical Record

Description: A medical record detailing an incident involving an injured boy.

#1

Location: ?

Fujitori Kotoyuki: Age 9

The patient had joined a group of children chasing down a fox that had wandered into the village. The fox then attacked the patient, leaving several lacerations on his face. The wound below his left eye is particularly deep and shows a considerable risk of scarring.

During treatment, he suddenly fell unconscious and was measured with a fever of over 40 degrees. Emergency transfer of the patient to the prefectural hospital was requested.

Upon arrival, however, the doctors there were unable to detect any abnormalities, even after multiple rounds of testing. After confirming his condition was stable, the patient was cleared to return home the following morning.

When questioned during a follow-up examination, the patient responded that he felt completely fine. According to the patient's mother, however, Kotoyuki is like a whole other boy and has been applying himself to his schoolwork harder than ever before.

#2

Location: ?

Notes:

While the request for emergency transport was being made, I was left alone in the examination room with the patient. During this time, he briefly regained consciousness. When I rushed over and began calling his name, he responded, "Kotoyuki... So, that is my name?"

It is not uncommon for patients with high fevers to experience disorientation. However, this young boy did not show any signs of distress. He remained expressionless, his face like an unmoving mask... His eyes were blank and glassy, not unlike those of a doll.

At the very least, I did not note any of the usual symptoms of fever-induced disorientation.

Immediately after, he again lost consciousness. As I did not accompany him, I do not know the details of what happened at the prefectural hospital.

Although such an episode can likely be attributed to a temporary disturbance in the patient's memory, as a long-practicing physician of Ebisugaoka, I cannot help but be reminded of that local phenomenon — the fox possession.

Letter from Kotoyuki

Description: A letter that arrived one day.

Location: ?

The days have grown warmer where I am. What is it like in Ebisugaoka? I can still recall the startling beauty of dandelions peeking out through cracks in stone walls.

I would like to express my appreciation for the letter you sent me. It was quite enlightening. I will follow in your footsteps and start by simply trying to enjoy life.

As per your recommendation, I purchased sauce-flavored senbei for the first time just the other day.

I must have been a quite a sight to see—a man dressed in a suit, buying cheap rice crackers and eating them with children outside the candy store.

The children laughed when they saw me, saying that real grown-ups don't buy such cheap snacks. And so, I explained to them how I wasn't able to eat many treats as a child, which is why I am eating them now.

When they heard that, they began swarming around me and telling me all the different, delicious ways you can eat sauce-flavored senbei. (Though I must say, I was taken aback when a child suggested I try putting strawberry jam on it.)

Imagine such a scene. A full-grown man, eating snacks with children.

While I was rather embarrassed, I felt like I had regained part of my lost childhood.

I intend to become reacquainted with my inner child, discover my own dreams, and live life to the fullest.

And once I have done so, I hope to reevaluate my feelings for you.

A Farmer's Story

Description: A note from a local farmer to his son.

Location: ?

Son! You better read this and get it through your thick head!

Let me take you back to something that happened during the war.

One day, some high-and-mighty military police from out of town got piss drunk and decided to kick over a statue of Inari-sama. Even spat on it.

The next morning, all those policemen were found dead in the waterway, their corpses bloated and heavy as hell.

They got carted off to the medical examiner's office so the coroner could take a look. You know, that place a few minutes from us.

I was one of the people who helped carry the bodies and wash them, so I saw everything with my own two eyes.

When that doctor put his knife to their bellies and opened them up, a whole swamp of stomach-churning gunk came pouring out.

And I don't mean their guts, either.

From neck to navel—hell, even right up their asses—those bodies were stuffed full of decomposing rats, birds, frogs, snakes, you name it.
And that look of frozen terror on their faces... I'll never forget that.

Anyway, moral of the story is that you better not EVER disrespect Inari-sama in any way! Even if you're drunk!

And don't forget that they have to learn how to escape dangerous traps too!

I was play fighting with the girl who lives next door when Mom got mad at me.
She said, "What if you leave a scar on her face? Then nobody will marry her!"
What's that all about?!

I think that girl would be a really good treasure hunter though. She always finds the hidden treasure when we play treasure hide-and-seek.

I want to become a treasure hunter with her someday!

"It's okay."
"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

#2

That's what I said to you,
when I saw you so scared.

#3

I wonder why
I called you over.

#4

I could've just lied to you.
Told you to go any which way.

#5

It happens all the time.
A kid falling to their death in the waterway.

Article: Child Drowns in Waterway

Description: An article about a child who died by drowning.

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 2, part of the Field Puzzle (Hard difficulty).

#1

On the evening of the seventh, a 5-year-old girl fell into the waterway of a rice field and subsequently drowned to death.

Authorities believe she accidentally fell in while playing.

#2

To the Children of Ebisugaoka,

Good kids don't play near waterways! Be especially careful when there's been a lot of rain because water levels will rise.
Good kids don't play in crop fields! Watch out for those reservoirs and ponds because they're dangerous too!

#3

Around 6 p.m., the girl's family discovered her floating face down in the waterway after being carried two kilometers downstream from where she initially fell in. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Multiple accidents have occurred due to this waterway in the past, but a single prevention measure has yet to be put in place.

#4

Parents and Guardians,

When children are lost and begin to panic, they become less able to pay attention to their surroundings.

There have been numerous reports of children running around areas they are not familiar with, then falling into waterways and reservoirs and drowning.

If you come across a lost child, please offer your help to them.

#5

This evening, the lifeless body of Shimizu Hinako was found in a crop field waterway after she presumably drowned to death.

It is suspected that she panicked after losing her way and began running around in the dark. This is likely when she stumbled and fell into the waterway.

(The name of the actual child who tragically died has been replaced with cut-out letters of my name. What a disgusting prank...)

Card from Rinko

I was always hoping you two would hurry up and cut it out with that weird "Space Wars" game of yours.

#2

I mean, you did answer my unspoken wishes. Just in the worst way possible.

#3

Because you know what he did when you decided you weren't going to play anymore? He pathetically kept at it, playing that silly game all by himself.

#4

You're all grown up now, right?

Well, this isn't just some kid's game! You think you can just call it quits whenever you want? That you can run away without facing consequences?!

#5

Today is your funeral.

I don't think it will be long before he finally gives you up.

The least you could do is show him that Shimizu Hinako is no more than ash now.

I love you, I love you, I LOVE YOU!

#2

I love you and Sakuko SO much!

I think I'd die if you ever left!

Sakuko and I would probably bite off our tongues, gouge out our eyeballs, and use gardening shears to chop off all of our fingers, one by one!

#3

Shu also loves you oh so very much!

He said he's so in love with you, every other girl to him is just a parasite that doesn't deserve to live!

I wonder if he's going to kill me too... Hinako, if you leave Shu behind, he's going to kill the rest of us girls.

Please, Hinako... Save us! I love you, I love you, I LOVE YOU!

#4

I've gotten on your nerves at least one time, right? I'm sorry! I'm so, so sorry!

Is that the reason you don't want to stay with us anymore?

What can I do to make you forgive me? What can I do to make you love Shu?

#5

Hinako, I like you so, so, so much!

I love you, I love you, I LOVE YOU!

Sakuko, Shu, and I, we all love EVERYTHING about you!

So please, don't listen to that creepy guy! You can't believe a single word he says!

School Founder's Anecdote

Description: I don't know if it's true or not, but this is supposedly the story behind Ebisugaoka Middle School's founding.

#1

Location: ?

When Mr. Yoneda was twenty years old, he came across an injured fox. Being the good teacher he is, he attended to the fox's wounds, shared his food with it, and cared for it.

One day, when the fox had fully recovered, it opened its mouth and spoke in human tongue. After expressing its appreciation to Mr. Yoneda, the fox then told him...

(The next page is torn out and on the ground...)

#2

Location: ?

"Buy as much of that mountain's land as you can. Borrow money, if you must, for it will surely bring you great wealth."

Shortly thereafter, the country commenced their dam construction plan, and the mountain Mr. Yoneda had purchased was indeed a boon. He spent every last yen he earned on his hometown of Ebisugaoka.

One result of his generosity was Ebisugaoka Middle School. Mr. Yoneda donated the Inari statue and housed it inside the small shrine seen on school grounds as his way of saying thanks to the fox that blessed him.

Hinako isn't coming...
I'm sorry for lying to you, but I thought that I needed to get you alone to find out how you truly feel.

Look into your heart and try opening this box with your true feelings.

Do you remember that day when just the two of us went to that café?
We talked about how it felt like we were delinquents since we were supposed to be going to school that day.

But you know what?
I didn't care what the other people thought about us, because as long as I could spend time with you, that was all I needed.

We both ordered the same cake that day.
I can still remember how my heart almost burst out of my chest the moment the same words flowed from those lips.

The sweet and tart fruit on the cake...
The taste still lingers in my mouth like it was yesterday.
Do you still remember the taste, too?

#2

So, you did remember.
Well, that makes me feel very special.

By the way... are you over Hinako now?

I apologize if I sound blunt, but I want to make it clear.
That girl is dead.

I know you're going through a rough time, right now. And you must be in so much pain.

But you know, I can be there for you.
Would you rather go through it yourself still?

I can picture us slowly unfolding the pages of our hearts, talking about all the small, mundane details of our day-to-day lives.

By filling up one journal after another with our thoughts, I know we can make a fresh start. A blank page upon which we can write the new story of our lives.

Surely you can see it, too?

#3

I'm glad to hear that you're trying to stay positive.
And remember, I'll always be here for you if you need anything.

You know, you're not the only one who's sad because Hinako's no longer with us.
If the two of could huddle together, we could soothe this pain that bites like the cold of winter.

And then, surely spring will arrive, welcoming us with sakura in full bloom to celebrate our union.

Can you picture the beautifully blooming sakura awaiting us?

#4

Dear Shu,
I like you.
I love you.
I always have, and I always will.
I'll be waiting to hear what you think about me.

Note from a Male Student

Description: A scrap of paper found inside the school. It explains how to decode "girl code."

#1

Location: ? (Hard difficulty only)

You can read girl code, right, Yosida?

Satou got a note from the girls that had "84*4" written on it. Do you know what that means?

#2

Location: ? (Hard difficulty only)

It's the code for "BAKA." So, you know, "stupid."

Girl code is based off the alphabet. Basically, you just switch letters with numbers and symbols that look like them.

So, "SATOU" would be "54+06."
"5" looks like an "S," and "4" looks like an "A," right?
And the "+" is "T" and the "0" is "O" because they're basically the same shape. "6" doesn't really look like it, but apparently it's "U."

So for my name "YOSIDA," it'd be "x05174."

But this isn't just some childish game. There are spiritual powers at work here, mark my words.

And the fox isn't telling people their futures, it's deciding them for itself!
You have to promise me you won't join in, even as a joke. Even if you don't believe it yourself. Please!

Tattered Paper

Description: This discusses the naginata used in the ritual.

#1

Location: ?

The inscription on the polearm reads "Ominokami Munemasa," also known as "Inadama."

"Inadama" is another word for "inazuma," meaning "lightning." This likely refers to the unique pattern of the blade's steel.

#2

Location: ?

Many alternative theories exist about the origin of the name "Inadama."

One such theory suggests that a man commissioned the blade, then gifted it to O'Ina, who was to be his "zuma" (meaning "wife"), upon their wedding.

Another theory states that, due to inazuma also meaning "bountiful harvest," the name was meant to represent the family's wish for continued prosperity for generations to come.

#3

Location: ?

It is a long-standing custom within the Tsuneki family for the next heir to present his bride with this naginata on their wedding day.

The decorations of the handle are also changed to suit the bride herself.

In honor of the family's newest bride, the design of a fledgling bird with its wings spread wide has been embedded in gold leaf into the handle—reflective of not only the bride's name, but the hope that she shall soar high on gilded wings.

Mandate of the Clan

Description: A rather old document. It appears to have been treated with the utmost care.

#1

Location: ?

A living sacrifice shall be offered every eight years, for nothing else can quell the wrath which dwells in the waters deep.

She shall be a maiden, fair and pure of heart, and the blood which flows through her veins shall be that which has been blessed by the stars and is beloved by fate.

Let it be known that only the most suitable sacrifice shall quench the being's vicious thirst.

The duty of finding such a sacrifice shall fall upon the head of this house.

#2

Location: ?

Drain from the sacrifice her blood, sparing not a drop, and add unto it wine that has been distilled eight times over.

Spare her body of its earthly viscera and fill it instead with rice that has been mixed with the master's saliva before sealing it shut with needle and thread.

In the dark shall the vessel rest undisturbed until the redolent odor of wine rises from her skin.

Adorn her in fine garments befitting a bride, then set her afloat on a raft of straw so her bloodwine may seep into the water's surface.

Do this, and into the depths she shall sink, quelling the wrath that waits below.

#3

Location: ?

And yet, our mortal world is everchanging. The age of gods has passed, and the powers of heaven have withered.

Such a living sacrifice may no longer suffice to quell the wrath of the deep, so our ancestors saw fit to place a seal of immense power upon the being below.

Upon the water they set a great stone. Now, the being remains sealed away, unable to break free of its prison.

However, earth cannot endure forever against the might of water.

As its power wanes, the seal shall break. When the wrath rises once more, we shall be powerless to stop it.

#4

Location: ?

Upon the rock our ancestors built a shrine, naming it "Heaven's Benediction" so it could serve as a sanctuary for our clan.

When Heaven's Benediction falls, the wrath of the depths shall rage against the heavens themselves, and both man and land shall face calamity.

When that time comes, the glory of Higa's gods shall wane, heralding too the end of our clan.

It is the duty of our family's head to ensure that Heaven's Benediction will prosper for generations to come.

It is the fate of our family's head that he shall prevent calamity from ever arising.

Research and Logs

Diary of Revenge

Description: A section of a local historian's notes.
Looks like he was researching Ebisugaoka's ancient history and religion. I wonder why he gave it such a scary title.

#1

Location: ?

According to the Nihon Shoki, one of Japan's most ancient history books, Yamata-no-Orochi, a colossal eight-headed dragon, demanded the sacrifice of beautiful young girls for it to devour.

Upon hearing this, the wild deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto brought eight barrels of sake to the dragon and lured it into drinking them. Once Yamata-no-Orochi had become intoxicated, he slew the dragon by chopping off all eight heads.

And according to Ebisugaoka's oldest historical records, after being decapitated, one of Yamata-no-Orochi's heads flew far west and fell between the mountains of Higa-no-Kuni.

The head eventually came back to life as a poisonous water dragon that plagued the land for many years to come.

Higa-no-Kuni is known now as Ebisugaoka.
There are records of toxic gas leaks from the underground water streams in the past. It is highly possible that this is where the legend of a poisonous water dragon stemmed from.

However, while the local records state that Yamata-no-Orochi's head flew here, there is no mention of this in the Nihon Shoki.

It's not hard to surmise that some shameless individuals put a religious spin on the noxious leaks to turn a profit, and falsified connections using famous literature to solidify their claim.

#2

Location: ?

Jumping to the end of the Heian period.
The infamous Genpei War wreaked havoc across the country, and defeated warriors from the Taira clan fled to all corners of Japan for sanctuary.

Ancient folklore claims that Ebisugaoka is one such hidden sanctuary.

Few ventured close to this land, for the poisonous gas that rose from the ground was a well-known phenomenon.
This made it the perfect hiding place for those shamed warriors.

Though, this did not come without its own inherent problems, as there are numerous records regarding Ebisugaoka's residents suffering from the water dragon's poison.

It's only natural, then, that they would turn to idolization as a device to quell the dragon's anger.
However, despite the popularity of the faith at the time, not of a hint of its legacy remains today.

It just goes to show that even the gods are not exempt from the fickleness of man.

#3

Location: ?

I found mention of a transition from the Water Dragon faith to the Divine Tree faith in historical records dating from around the middle of the Kamakura period.

There, it is written that a peculiar monk donning multiple masks and measuring over ten shaku (approximately three meters) in height visited Ebisugaoka.
A frankly ridiculous overstatement.

That monk brought people to a great cedar tree—later to be idolized in the Divine Tree faith—and told them the following:

"You who fear the water dragon's wrath, quake no more. For the beast grows weak and prepares for slumber. It is none other than this great tree that has sapped the evil from it. Devote yourselves to the great tree, and it shall keep that beast subdued until the end of time."

Upon hearing the monk's words, the people of Ebisugaoka abandoned the Water Dragon faith and converted to the Divine Tree faith.

However, in time, the Divine Tree faith would also begin to change.

Being a settlement hidden away from society, the residents had no way for trading with the outside world. And so, they were forced to treat their tools with extra care. It was from this unique culture that the Tsukumogami faith was born.

Local historic records state that old tools would be brought to the hollows of the divine tree and offered to the gods. Once again, further warping the religion.

Between three-meter-tall monks, giant sacred cedars, and dragons, do humans simply sense divine presence in anything larger than themselves?
How utterly ridiculous.

#4

Location: ?

And then, in the Edo period, Ebisugaoka witnessed another faith-changing event.

The divine tree, the symbol of their religion, was struck by lightning and burned down.

By this time, the ideologies of the Tsukumogami faith had taken root, and sacredness was now determined by the antiquity of an object.

The divine tree was not worshipped for subduing the water dragon. Instead, it was only due to the fact that it was the oldest object in the area.

And so, a new divine object was decided upon to take the tree's place.
That next target for worship was the Inari statue.

Before long, faith in the Inari statue itself developed, mixing with the Tsukumogami faith to create an amalgamation of beliefs completely unique to Ebisugaoka.

To this effect, the mongrel Inari faith here in Ebisugaoka has almost no likeness to that practiced throughout the rest of Japan and boasts a pathetically superficial history.

Even this changing of idols has been turned into some epic divine story by the priests. This is the nonsense they came up with:

With the divine tree destroyed by lightning, the land lost its guardian, and the ancient evil water dragon attempts to rise from its slumber. Hearing the town's plight, a family of benevolent foxes traveled far from the west to subdue the dragon once more. The people's faith in them bolsters their power, but without enough power, the dragon shall awaken once more.

So now they are convincing locals to devote themselves to the new god, Inari-sama.

Water Dragon, Divine Tree, Tsukumogami, and now Inari-sama.
These pathetic people believe their faith has a thousand years of history, yet it's been mutilated time and again to suit their petty needs.
Man truly is a fickle beast.

On the 21st, thirteen Ebisugaoka residents were brutally killed in broad daylight. The police department has yet to find the killer.
—Kinshu Paper Morning Edition, May 22, Meiji 13 (1880)

This was a truly horrible incident. Police investigations pulled up nothing, and construction on a large-scale dam began soon after, drawing a whole new workforce to Ebisugaoka that rapidly developed the town.
Before long, everybody had forgotten about the mass murder.

I, however, have not forgotten. There is something very peculiar about this incident.

According to multiple eyewitness reports, the killer was a giant of a man—over two meters tall—who had covered himself head to toe in tree bark and roots fashioned into a kind of armor. On top of all that, he also wore a Noh mask.
He marched around the town preaching the following:

"You worship false idols! The foxes lead you astray! Destroy their foul statues! If reverence is not given to the divine tree, then that water dragon shall arise once more to bring calamity upon this land!"

The man then proceeded to butcher everyone in his path with a katana.

I'd wager that the perpetrator was some kind of Divine Tree faith fanatic.
To the followers of the old practices, the transition of faith from the divine tree to the Inari statue is surely seen as an unforgivable act of blasphemy.

It's entirely possible that the strange guise he wore was to replicate the giant monk who founded the religion in the Kamakura period.

According to another eyewitness report, we also know what happened to the man in his "final moments."
This too, unsurprisingly, has been made out into some kind of divine happening.

"A thick fog swept in, and from it appeared a pack of eerily glowing foxes. They circled around the man, surrounding him, and then everything was swallowed by the fog, leaving nothing behind."

What juvenile drivel.

My father had the courage to call out the town's religious group for the embezzlement of local taxes.
He died in an accident shortly after, and those crooks claimed it as Inari-sama's divine punishment.

I abandoned all faith and became an atheist from that day on.
I don't believe in the gods or Buddha or divine punishments or stupid curses.
Instead, I turned to research, and I began delving into the local history of religion and folklore.

My goal was to expose their precious faith for what it really was: a bunch of wild tales crafted to suit their manipulative needs. And ultimately, get my revenge.

I write this journal like some kind of final message now due to my steadily deteriorating health.

From the beginning of this month, my appetite has drastically decreased.
Even after three weeks, I still don't get hungry. And any attempts to force down food simply results in vomiting.

Two days ago, I tried to eat some rice porridge to no avail. I threw it up soon after.
More concerning was that there was something moving around in my vomit.
It was the larva of a locust.

Yesterday, I woke in a sudden fit of choking coughs.
It left an odd squirming and scratchy sensation in my throat and mouth.
Turning on the light, I spat out what I had coughed up. It was a grasshopper and a cricket.
Surrounding me in my bed, I found another dozen or so insects crawling on the sheets.
I had coughed up all these bugs.

I can't go to a doctor. If anyone were to see this, they would immediately claim it as some kind of divine punishment.

I woke again in the early hours of the morning to a painful fit of coughing and countless bugs spewing from my mouth.
They come out of me and crawl up my curtains and scutter across my floor until every inch of my room is covered in a gleaming, writhing carpet.
I'm nothing more than skin and bones at this point. Yet my head feels bulbous and heavy.

Whenever I move it, I can hear a dry chittering inside me.
My head is full of them now, or maybe their eggs.

I had a headache that felt like my head was going to split open just moments ago, but it went away like it was nothing. My cough and the insects are getting progressively worse, however.
I don't think I will make it through the night.

I refuse to believe that this is some divine punishment for questioning the gods, though.
Who in their right mind would believe such nonsense?

A Perspective on Hierogamy

Description: A statement reflecting on marriage between gods and humans, seemingly written from personal experience. It appears to have been written with a fountain pen.

Tales of mortals being wed to gods and spirits can be found throughout every culture across human history.

Certainly, from the perspective of humans, to tie oneself to a divine being is an undeniable honor.

However, if one were to consider the opposite perspective, the divine being is binding themselves to a vulgar life-form.
What could possibly motivate them to make such a degrading choice?

Countless seasons have passed since I first came to this sacred land of beauty and wonder... and yet, even now, if I consider whether I myself am worthy of such an honor, I cannot answer in the affirmative with any confidence.

So, I must ask myself, what benefit is there to such beings mixing their divine blood with that of lowly mortals? To be clear, I am overjoyed to be of some use to them. However, I cannot help but wonder...

#2

Location: Dark Shrine Corridors (NG+), inside the room with the Inari-sama door in the southwestern corner of the map.

It is a core tenet of Shintoism that each land throughout all Japan is protected by its own deities.

From this, people pray to the gods so that they and their lands might be blessed. In turn, their belief strengthens the gods and gives them the ability to better protect the land in a beneficial cycle of reciprocation.

Thus, the bond between humans and gods is vital to the prosperity of both.

If the underlying strength of this bond can indeed be explained through mortal blood, then the reason for the gods joining themselves in sacred matrimony to mortals who call their land home becomes evident: perhaps it is through the addition of their blood that the bond between mortal and god is strengthened.

And if this is true, then I should think that frequently upholding such forms of unification would be best for all involved. However, in practice, marital bonds between mortal and deity are vanishingly rare.

It is a mystery why this is so. Or perhaps, I find the greater mystery to be, why was I chosen?

#3

Location: Dark Shrine Worship Hall (NG+), inside the room with the Inari-sama door in the western section.

The other day, my honorable father-in-law told me that fate had smiled upon me; that my blood had been blessed by the stars.

If I attempt to interpret his words, I can only understand them to mean that he believes that an intervention of good fortune—or coincidence—allowed me to be so connected with this house.

However, I do not believe he meant to humble me with his words.

Instead, I think his words should be taken more literally. My very blood was favored by fate.

In the world of mortals, there exist rare individuals who possess non-ABO blood types. So, maybe having "blood that was blessed by the stars" simply means that I was born with a rare mutation.

After all, there are many variations, some of which are as uncommon as one in one hundred thousand people.

Perhaps when a human child who possesses blood that contains the power to deepen the bond between mortals and gods is born into a village, they are selected as a candidate for a hierogamous marriage.
If such is the case, then it would explain why such partnerships are so infrequent.

I wonder who shall be next to be welcomed into this world. If it is another child beloved by fate, then I would like to do all in my power to help their transition into a new life.

Research Notes on "Enmi-jugonroku"

Description: The research covers romance-related spells used in past centuries.

Location: ?

The wish to have one's romantic desires fulfilled is as old as humanity itself. Consequently, there have existed many arts by which people attempt to make such dreams come true. One such method was to employ a sorcerer, known as a "jugonshi," to perform an incantation written in the Enmi-jugonroku.

After such spells were suspected of causing chaos and turmoil in the imperial court, their practice was expressly forbidden under the Yoro Code in the first year of the Tempyo-hoji era (757 A.D.).

However, these incantations were later adopted into the practice of Onmyodo, where their effects continued to be studied. According to multiple sources, powerful romantic spells that have been successfully cast are often accompanied by the scent of sandalwood.

Research Notes on Hakkokusou

Description: Notes containing information about a mysterious plant.

I have learned from reading "Exotic Herbology" that Kakura-makakura is made by grinding up the seeds of Hakkokusou, an extraordinarily rare herb.

Hakkokusou is notoriously difficult to cultivate as it requires a very specific environment in which to grow. Rarely found in the wild, this precious medicinal herb is so prized that it has earned itself the title of "the flower of the gods."

According to folklore, the herb can give one the ability to converse with gods, visit their lands, and even awaken dormant powers. With the manifold divine experiences this herb is rumored to provide, it is no surprise that numerous legends talk of kings journeying to find it under the belief it holds the key to immortality.

When ground, its seeds are said to smell of peaches.

I began taking this medicine out of desperation. My first impression was that it smells of peaches and is faintly sweet.

After taking it before bed for the past three nights, I had my first lucid dream. For the whole night, I was able organize my thoughts in a pleasant darkness.

Was this what the tales meant when they said the drug allows you to speak with your inner self?

I've heard that taking vitamin B6 makes it easier to remember dreams. However, I'm sure its effectiveness depends on factors like dosage and body composition.

At any rate, this has been a let-down so far.

It has now been two weeks since I began taking Kakura-makakura. I've observed no significant physical changes. If anything, I've been falling asleep and waking with ease.

I have lucid dreams an average of once every two days. When I do, I feel neither the passage of time nor exhaustion, which allows me to become lost in thought.

However, today, I was met with startling results.
In my dream, there was another version of myself who spoke to me.

The other version of myself and I have talked for many nights now.
Through these fervent discussions, I have come to the conclusion that Hinako needs to speak to her inner self, just as I have.

It's clear she's not currently in her right mind.
Why else would she even consider accepting that farce of a marriage that has been pushed upon her otherwise?

There's no point in trying to force Hinako's opinion to change. She must make this realization for herself for it to stick.
If she could just talk to her other self within her dreams, I'm positive she could be led to back to rationality.

And then, she would realize just who truly has her best interests in mind...

Research Notes on "Kakura-makakura"

Description: A note containing details of a mysterious, miraculous medicine.

Location: ?

There exists a wondrous medicine that a Bateren missionary is said to have brought to Nagasaki during the Tensho era (circa 1580 A.D.). It was a drug used during mediation by individuals to speak with their inner selves.

It is said that through the power of this medicine, individuals become able to delve into their innermost selves. Everyone possesses an "inner you," and inside that "inner you" is another "inner you," and inside that "inner you"...

This endlessly repeating chain was named "Kakura-makakura," a term from an old Nagasaki dialect referring to "nesting" structures.

Research Notes on "Exotic Herbology"

Although the most famous translated western medical book remains the "New Text on Anatomy," there was a peculiar work by the name of "Exotic Herbology" published in the fifth year of the An'ei era (1776 A.D.). Strange as the text was, it has largely been forgotten by history.

A foreign missionary brought this text to Japan along with a curious medicine that would supposedly allow one to speak with divine spirits. This drug came to be known as "Kakura-makakura" by locals.

However, in order to have contact with the gods, one must first liberate one's soul. However, upon doing so, the individual will fall into a temporary state of unconsciousness, potentially leaving them vulnerable to malevolent spirits.

Local Doctor's Note

Description: A note from the doctor working at the clinic. They aren't originally from Ebisugaoka, but seemed to be deeply interested in its culture and traditions. They've written about their experiences and thoughts living here.

Traditionally, the residents of this town have long relied on folk medicine for medical care.
Even to this day, a number of the more elderly members of the community still turn to herbal remedies over modern medicine.

Too many times do I get these older patients come to me only after exhausting the usefulness of their traditional remedies.
I just wish they would come to me sooner, before it is too late for them.

I was given the chance to discuss my concerns with one of the Iwais, a family who have stood as the town's physicians for generations. And to my pleasant surprise, they asked if I would give some talks to educate the elderly on modern medicine.

I want to respect local traditions as best I can, though. After all, folk medicine and modern medicine are just two sides of the same coin. I believe they can—and should—coexist with each other.

#2

Location: ?

There are cases where patients see an improvement in their symptoms not by taking medicine, but rather by simply talking to a doctor.
The cause of this phenomenon lies undeniably in the trust fostered between practitioner and patient.

Conclusively, the pharmacists who have been trusted since ancient times perhaps could be said to contain a similar power to that of the local gods here.

Even among the younger generations of this town, there are many who believe praying to Oinari-san will soothe pain and speed up the healing process.

One's fortitude of faith is thought to have direct relation to potency. There are even some town elders who claim to have had broken bones miraculously mended after praying to Oinari-san.

#3

Location: ?

There are numerous tales of those who blaspheme against the Inari faith being possessed by the fox.

These tales have no quantitative scientific basis, of course. However, I want to try my best to avoid outright refuting tradition and local beliefs.

The effectiveness of any medicine provided to a patient who believes themselves sick due to the fox's possession is drastically low.
As a man of science, I surprise even myself here when I say that, for the best results, patients should be told to offer their sincere prayers to Oinari-san prior to seeking medical treatment.

By respecting and complying with local traditions, I feel I can build a far stronger rapport with my patients here.

#4

Location: ?

Even now, the trust given to the long-standing physicians of the Iwai family is unshakably strong.
When I spoke to the eldest working member of the family at a gathering, I was astonished by their outstanding bounty of knowledge.

Though, as they discussed the details of their practices with me, I got the hint that they might still be using controlled substances in their treatment.

However, I think it best that I look the other way in this situation.
While it is now illegal to produce the cloudy rice wine known as doburoku, people across Japan were once free to make it as they needed.
Perhaps operating within the gray area of legislation between traditional and modern medicine has always been the role of local physicians here.

#5

Location: ?

I had assumed up until now that being possessed by the fox was a sort of curse.
However, it turns out that among the followers of the Inari faith in Ebisugaoka it can be more nuanced than that.

I heard one tale of a housewife who was possessed by the fox after sharing some scraps of food with a real, starving fox. As a sign of gratitude, the fox showed her the whereabouts of hidden treasure.
Another tale claims that a pious shaman was possessed by the fox and given premonitions of a coming famine. They were able to warn the town and stockpile enough food to endure it.
There are numerous stories like this suggesting that being possessed by the fox is not necessarily a turn of bad luck.

Though, with the influence of today's media from outside the town regarding ghost and horror stories, the fox has become seen as a purely negative phenomenon—particularly among the younger generations.

A "Fox's Wedding" is a common expression used for times when it rains while the sun is still shining.
According to the older folk here in Ebisugaoka, however, they also used this expression for when a young girl was spirited away.

Folklore pertaining to gods and spirits becoming infatuated with human women is not something unique to Japan and can be found across the world.
Ebisugaoka is no exception to this. Even here, there are of old tales of young girls being taken away on a "Fox's Wedding" and disappearing forever.

During the Meiji and Taisho periods, the town elders would apparently reassure the families of missing daughters that they had been swept away by a fox lord and are now enjoying a life of luxury without a care.

There have been sightings of foxes coming into town recently. I'm sure that the older generations who have grown up learning to respect foxes are fine, but I'm concerned for any children who may try and chase or provoke the creatures.

Foxes by nature are not aggressive, but just like wild dogs, they carry diseases such as rabies, tetanus, and echinococcosis to name just a few.
The town committee should send out warnings to ensure people don't get unnecessarily close to them.

The onsen geyser that suddenly started spewing water on the third of this month in Iwashimizu, Ebisugaoka of Yamabe District finally came to a stop early this morning.

The geyser reached a height of at least 30 meters, but the ceaseless noise and pungent hydrogen sulfide gas have left residents troubled.

Three individuals have been hospitalized with complaints of skin sores and other maladies they claim were caused by the gas.

In addition, strong concentrations of arsenic have been detected in the geyser's water—20 milligrams per liter. Many residents have concerns about future environmental issues this might lead to.

Rumors that these events are being caused by Inari-sama's curse have been spreading among the more religiously-minded of the elderly population. However, the Prefectural Disaster Prevention Division is urging residents to treat such rumors as superstition and instead prepare for any potential disasters ahead.

Undetermined COD Case 09

Body was astonishingly malnourished, and the calvarium had split open like it had burst from the inside.
The cranial bones had been hollowed out and filled with insect eggs—later identified as belonging to various species including locusts, grasshoppers, and crickets.

No evidence to suggest they were put there by human hand. Seemed to be planted by insects naturally—highly unusual behavior considering the current harsh winter temperatures.

Yet another corpse to come through with an inexplicable COD.
At least this one was easier to stomach than Case 08.

All bodies with unexplainable causes of death are kept secret and swiftly handed over to the police department.
In turn, the police department immediately disposes of such bodies without so much as a customary glance.

Additional notes:
This man was suspected of blaspheming against religious doctrine.
He seemed to bear some kind of grudge against the Inari faith.

It's always the same with these strange corpses.
After all, there can only be one outcome for not paying reverence to Oinari-san.

The patients' conditions are declining suddenly and rapidly. Symptoms are as follows:

Labored breathing, cognitive impairment, quadriplegia, involuntary movements.
In addition to these, an even stranger symptom has arisen: the patients' facial features appear to be deforming.

The patients' faces remains stuck in expressions of constant strain, their teeth bared, their eyes narrowed into a menacing glare.

I have received reports that the patients will sometimes make strange sounds, then try to get on all fours and crawl around.

Housemaids who served the family for many years whisper among themselves, speaking of so-called "fox possession." I have scolded them for spreading such unscientific, superstitious rumors.

Today, I was ordered to keep silent about this matter by the head of the house. The family has denied my request to transport them to a hospital.

I wonder if it is out of fear that talk of the supernatural will tarnish the family's reputation.

However, I do not expect the patients' conditions to improve with in-home treatment alone.

The head of the house did not give permission to perform autopsies on the bodies. There will be no funeral, and they will be sent to be cremated immediately.

February 14th, Midnight

The eldest son has passed away. Again, there will be no funeral, and the body will be sent away for cremation.

The eldest and second-born daughters are also experiencing symptoms that are worsening by the hour.
I believe they will be in critical condition by tomorrow at the latest.

It's a miracle. How could this be?

The two daughters' symptoms have improved dramatically.

February 18th

Both patients have made a full recovery. I do not understand it one bit.
Could this be a phenomenon that cannot be explained through scientific means...?

There exists no record in any literature of a disease or toxin that could lead to such a cruel illness. Such a dramatic recovery as the two daughters experienced has likewise never been documented.

Now, the housemaids are whispering about a supposed curse. Yet, I can no longer chide them and insist science can prove all.

Regarding the "Legend of the Sacred Sword"

Description: A record written by someone researching Ebisugaoka's folklore and legends.

#1

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 4, at the base of the divine tree.

It is said that Ebisugaoka was a hidden village that once served as refuge for defeated soldiers of the Taira clan.

Unfortunately, evidence to support this tale has yet to be found. Still, Ebisugaoka shares many cultural similarities with those of other hidden villages, and it is my belief that this tale is true.

According to other local legends, the soldiers who fled here vowed to exact revenge upon the Minamoto clan and restore the Taira clan to its former glory. Upon swearing this oath, they buried the sword of their deceased leader at the base of the great tree that serves to protect this land.

It'd be a historical breakthrough if we could find that sword.

#2

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 1 (NG+), on the dining table in the living room of the house on the east side of the mountain path.

However, it is said the sword's animosity continued to grow, even as it remained buried under the earth. So, the people erected a sacred barrier around it using Jizo statues as anchors.

If one wished to find the sword, they should start by looking for these Jizo statues first.

It appears that the barrier works by creating a spiritual harmony that inhibits the sword's animosity.

Harmony? Yin and yang? The five elements of wuxing?
During this period, it was thought that everything was composed of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Therefore, "five" was a number associated with harmony. In other words, there should be five Jizo statues.

Are five such statues located in this town? I expect tracking them down will prove a tremendous task.

#3

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 2 (NG+), at the inner corner of the first house on the left on the north street.

In the Muromachi period, the great famine of Oei had young individuals desperate for quick money, and so they searched for the legendary sword. One story even claims that the sword was discovered.

However, the youth who found it became consumed by the Taira clan's resentment and massacred the others one after another.

After that, the sword became known as the "sacred sword" and is thought to contain the lingering animosity of the defeated Taira soldiers.

Was the sword hidden after that? There is not enough information. I must search for the Jizo statues myself.

I was able to get in contact with a resident who knows the location of an old Jizo statue. This may be my first clue that will lead me to the sword.

#4

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 3 (NG+), on a red barrel at the beginning of the west alleyway.

There were a number of damaged Jizo statues in the hollows of the divine tree. I saw old and broken tools laid in front of the statues, most likely so that they could be put to rest.

The sacred sword came far before the Inari faith. As such, Jizo statues are more likely than Inari statues to be used as anchors for sealing the sword.

It seems I'll need to look into beliefs that are older than the Inari faith to find the sacred sword.

#5

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 4 (NG+), at the shrines next to the divine tree.

The defeated soldiers needed a place they could hide to escape prosecution by the enemy army.

They were unable to engage with anyone from surrounding settlements, so there was no way for them to purchase new goods. This forced them to make do with what they already had and led to a culture where tools were used for as long as possible.

The act of treating old tools with respect and reusing broken or unwanted ones was seen as a virtue and called "kishu."

It was thought that when a tool reached the end of its lifespan and was laid to rest, then both the tool and the god to whom it was offered would be pleased.

Clearly a tradition born of necessity in a hidden village of defeated soldiers.

#6

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 5 (NG+), on a workbench next to a house at the second path turn.

In the Edo period, lightning struck the divine tree, leading people to believe that its spiritual power was lost. They then turned to worship the next oldest object—the Inari statues.

Thus, the people of Ebisugaoka began worshipping Inari-sama.

However... The sacred sword predates even the Inari faith.

If the oldest object was to become the next object of worship, then it should have been the sacred sword.

In other words, if the sacred sword is discovered, it will, without a doubt, undermine the very foundation of local beliefs.

Autoscopic Hallucination

A type of visual hallucination caused by brain tumors in which an individual perceives their own image before them as if they were standing in front of a mirror.

Although it is merely a reflection, there have been extremely rare cases in which hallucinations have been reported to possess a will of their own and are able to hold conversations.

In such instances, the reflection will often state negative opinions about or demonstrate hostile behavior towards the individual. Such apparitions are thought to be projections of negative feelings about the self that have been repressed.

This is also known as the doppelgänger phenomenon.

Movie Review of "The Great Space Invasion"

Description: A critic's review of the movie "The Great Space Invasion".

Location: Ebisugaoka Part 3 (NG+), on a bench in front of the Chizuruya General Store.

Although this work features UFOs and humans who are being controlled by aliens, the aliens themselves never make an appearance on screen. Instead, this film illuminates the corrosive power of suspicion: Sometimes, trying to distinguish one's fellow man as friend or foe can be the real horror.

In one particularly chilling scene, local residents of the town where the UFO was sighted are mistakenly targeted as body-snatching aliens. The accusing humans scream and jeer as they send their own kind to a detention center. What's worse, anyone who dares speak against the group is seen as "one of them" and is locked up as well.

One can only ask oneself, is coerced solidarity among humans really solidarity at all?

At the end of the movie, the number of people killed during the alien invasion is shown. Interestingly, far more humans were killed by their fellow man than attacks from UFOs.

Perhaps the aliens left Earth at the end not because they lost, but because they believed that humankind was not worth taking over.

The Great Space Invasion is a movie that provides somewhat interesting social commentary to its audience, but anyone looking forward to a fun action romp will be sorely disappointed.
